**Beginner’s Tips – Wicca**
Wicca is for Beginner’s… or is it?
So some of you might read that title and nod and smile, some may be indifferent or unaware, and others may get a bit spicy. Well call me a hot pepper, because I’m part of the latter. I’ve seen it described in social media comments, heard it spoken and even seen it published in articles. Wicca is for beginners, Wicca is a starting point and nothing more, Wicca is simple, Don’t waste your time on Wicca. It usually goes hand in hand with the Wicca bashing which I’m happy to say I haven’t seen as much of late, but I’ve also pulled back out of a lot of witchy groups and focus mostly on AWA which is a very inclusive place for all forms of witchcraft, Wicca included
.
Where this misconception comes from is the fact Wicca is an easy place to start because it is probably the single most published path of witchcraft and was the flagship that ushered the occult into the mainstream. It’s esoteric rituals and workings have become so ingrained in non Wiccan witchcraft that a lot don’t know where the two start and end. Your resources are so plentiful almost anyone can get ahold of a copy of something Wiccan. Unfortunately some read a few Scott Cunningham or Silver Ravenwolf, declare they know all there is to know and find Wicca boring or easy. Then move on, vocally perpetuating the myths. Now I’m not picking on those authors as there is some fantastic information and framework in their books for a solitary practitioner, but they really are the barest sliver of Wicca. When you get into coven or traditional groups, the teachings can take on a university feel with new ideas and thoughts being opened up to you. Projects and lessons that will push your magical limits. But it is in these spaces of discomfort one will grow. I also believe you should move on if thats your calling, there are so many paths that can bring out the self confidence and power that resides in all of you.
And while this is an opinion article I would implore you to consider the fact that you wouldn’t call someone a baby witch, I wouldn’t call Wicca a beginner tradition but instead a good place to begin. Subtle differences in wording can make all the difference. We can’t make our candle shine brighter by blowing out another’s.
Until we talk again, Blessed Be
